Taskforce - The Development of Services for people with Diabetes

A joint CREST/Diabetes UK Taskforce was established in 2001. The Taskforce published a framework for the development of services for people with diabetes in 2003. The framework contains a wide range of recommendations covering the full spectrum of the conditions from screening for people with a high risk of developing diabetes to the prevention and treatment of the condition. The Taskforce envisaged that a 5 - 10 year programme would be needed to implement the framework.

The framework is divided into 5 key areas:

  • Prevention and early detection;
  • Care, monitoring and treatment;
  • Targeting vulnerable groups;
  • Planning and managing services; and
  • Implementation issues.

There are a number of "building blocks" in each of the above key areas covering a range of issues which the Taskforce felt needed to be addressed to ensure the provision of a high quality diabetes service.

This report provides an update on the progress made against each of the "building blocks" set out in the framework."
